Creating a Superwoman Costume at Home

When you're in a pinch for a cute woman's or girl's costume, consider throwing together a superwoman costume. It won't be nearly as authentic or realistic looking as a costume purchased in a store or online, but it should be apparent what type of costume is being worn. Below is a piece-by-piece description of what you need to put something together that screams "Superwoman to the rescue!"

Superwoman Cape

Every superwoman costume needs a bright red cape that flies out behind the body. Some costumes use a shorter cape that falls just below the waist, while others use a cape that dangles almost to the floor. Your costume will be more realistic if you have a store bought cape, but you can also use a red bed sheet, curtain, or some other type of red fabric.

Rather than trying to tie the fabric around the neck, consider pinning or sewing it to the shoulders of the shirt. This will make sure it stays on and avoids the frustration of putting it back around the neck over and over again.

Choose a length according to the amount of fabric you have available and the age of the person wearing the costume. Longer capes may be great for an adult, but smaller girls may get tangled and fall if they want to run and have fun in their superwoman costume.

Blue Shirt

A long sleeved, dark blue shirt is needed for your superwoman costume. If you want to make it very clear that superwoman is in the house, find a way to put a big yellow triangle with a large S on the chest. You may be able to do this with colored hair sprays which are sold all over the place during the Halloween season, or you could use some type of Halloween makeup if it isn't touched a long while worn.
Even without the S on the chest, it should be obvious what you are dressed up as, once you get the rest of the pieces together. Superwoman is a rather distinctive figure.

Red Skirt

The bottom part of your superwoman costume should be a red skirt, preferably with some flow and movement to the material. If you have a little bit of time, you may be able to find a suitable red skirt at a thrift or secondhand store. If you don't have time for that, dig through the closet and find the closest thing possible. A very deep pink may work if you are really in a pinch and have nothing in red.

Gold Belt

This is one of the most distinctive features of the superwoman costume. It doesn't have to be a legitimate belt. You can use a scarf, shirt, leggings, anything that is gold or at least tan in color. Wrap it around the waist and call it a belt.

Tall Boots/Leggings

Superwoman is known for her tall red boots. Many of the costumes you see in stores just use legging pieces that are designed to look like tall boots. You can do something similar by using red leggings, red knee high socks or real boots if you have them in red. You may even use boots of a different color and stretch leg warmers or socks with the feet cut out over the top of the boots.

You can also add a headpiece for superwoman costume, if you have something gold that would work.
